Kłodzko City
On planning a visit to the District of Kłodzko, Kłodzko, the uncrowned capital of the region and the main city of this historic county, with its unique charm, individual character and a number of first-class attractions is a must on your route. Anyway, this main city of the Glacensis Euroregion is a real crossroad and sooner or later you are bound to arrive there. It is closer to Vienna, Bratislava, Prague or Berlin than to Warsaw. Kłodzko is a focal point for the roads leading to local spas and several tourist destinations. It is a base for tourists hiking in the mountains or enjoying the famous and spectacular skiing slopes. It is also a crossroad of three cultures: Polish, Czech and German the spirit of the past ages.

Kłodzko is the oldest settlement in the district. According to the Czech Kosmas chronicle, as early as in 981, a village was situated on the road from the Czech country to Silesia. Its strategic location was a cause to several instances of destruction during Polish-Czech wars in subsequent centuries. The settlement at the foot of the castle hill was developing quickly and became a trade and political centre of the valley and the whole region. In the 2nd half of the 13t h century Kłodzko, might already have the city charter. A landmark in the local history was the proclamation of the District of Kłodzko as an independent county by George from Podiebrad, a Czech king. The decision was made in 1459 during the Hussite wars. In the 16th century the county was taken over by the Habsburg dynasty. In the middle of the 18 th century the District of Kłodzko was separated from the Austrian monarchy and became an integral part of Prussia. The Napoleonic wars at the early 19 th century brought a lot of looting in the area. A period of rapid growth took place at the turn of the 19th century. The two world wars brought about poverty, although the area avoided serious damage.

Even now, the atmosphere of the streets of Kłodzko is still marked by the climate of the German older, the frivolousness of the Czech baroque and the credibility of Dutch merchants. The Old Town of Kłodzko enchants at any time of the night and day. Wandering along the streets with narrow of houses speckled with renaissance details, the eye keeps catching glimpses of tiny masterpieces of masonry. The location of the city, several monuments, old architecture and the beauty of the Old Town quarter combined with the Nysa embankments create contribute to the city’s unique enjoyed by more and more tourists every year.
The Fortress of Kłodzko It is the most precious work of the modern fortification in Poland. It was erected by combing various systems of war architecture, mainly Italian and Dutch. Primarily built at the times of Frederick the Great as an important link of the fortifications in the Sudeten mountains. Attractions to be recommended: Lapidarium, climbing the fortress walls and a walk along the miners’ pavements.

The Millennium of the Polish State Underground Tourist Route It is a relict after the several storey aisle-chamber excavations that were dug in the Middle Ages under the town for defensive purposes and as store-rooms. The closing of the major part of the underground passages was caused by subsidence of the excavations which endangered the whole architecture of the Old Town. Currently several connected sections of corridors are available to visitors. The medieval gothic bridge It is compared to the magnificent Charles Bridge in Prague; A tangible evidence of (more than political) relationships with Czech. The bridge is topped with six groups of figures.
The houses in the Old Town Quarter Over 400 listed buildings are registered in Kłodzko. The majority of them are gathered in the old Town quarter.
